On drones in sea rescue

What are the requirements and opportunities when it comes to using drones in maritime search and rescue? NextG2Com partner the Swedish Sea Rescue Society (SSRS) gathered all SSRS-affiliated thesis students working on drone-related topics for a full day of presentations and knowledge exchange.

Maritime search and rescue is one of three demonstration arenas within NextG2Com. On May 27, master’s students who had completed their theses this semester in collaboration with SSRS met at the organization in Gothenburg. What they had in common was the theme of drones in maritime search and rescue. From NextG2Com, three master’s students participated, each tackling different challenges associated with using drones in a maritime environment. 

Beau Forrez’s project focused on a ship-mounted radio guidance system to enable the recovery of rescue drones, while Oliver Marholev and David Trivic investigated altitude measurement and obstacle detection for fixed-wing drones. The theses have been presented, and approved and published works can be found in the LUP database: Lund University Publications.
