Research, Doctoral Students, and Demos – NextG2Com’s First Program Day

Postersession at a meeting at university

The competence center NextG2Com gathered for a program day focusing on ongoing research, doctoral students, and demonstrations.

NextG2Com is a Vinnova Competence Center that brings together research and expertise in future advanced communication systems. On September 25, sixty members and interested participants met for the center’s first program day at Lund University’s Faculty of Engineering (LTH). The program included insights into the center’s research and sustainability work, two international keynote presentations, a poster and demo session, and finally, workshops within the center’s research themes.

Marja Matinmikko-Blue gave an opening address about her work in interdisciplinary research for future communication systems, sharing experiences from the development of 5G and 6G in Finland. Marja Matinmikko-Blue is also a member of NextG2Com’s International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB). Achim J. Lilienthal from the Technical University of Munich, also an ISAB member, provided an overview of his research area in robotics.

The poster session began with the center’s doctoral students giving one-minute presentations of their posters. After these rapid poster pitches, a lively session followed, featuring 20 posters and demonstrations from four participating companies. The competence center’s demonstrators presented themselves and the various arenas where the center’s research can be tested and applied. The demonstrators in NextG2Com include industry, sea rescue, and healthcare. Researchers within the center were invited to consider which of these demonstrators might be suitable for testing their research in the future.

Vinnova Competence Centers

In a competence center, universities, colleges, research institutes, companies, and public organizations conduct world-class research in close collaboration within areas that are important for Sweden’s competitiveness. The collaboration between the different partners aims to generate new, excellent knowledge in fields that the participating higher education institutions have chosen to prioritize. This knowledge should be applicable in industry or society, leading to new products, processes, or models.
